Folly Beach, known as “The Edge of America,” offers something for everyone who ventures out past James Island. Local surfers flock to the Washout on Folly Beach for the best waves in the Charleston area, and the beach hosts several surfing tournaments each year. Locals and visitors also can monitor the local wildlife on the beach, including the loggerhead turtles that nest on Folly from May to September annually. In recent years, the approximately forty nests produced over three thousand turtle hatchlings, the survival of which was due largely to the care of volunteers.
